The Process of Uniting, i.e. the Church Consolidation in the Reformed Evangelical Church of Lithuania
(Presentation of the Essence of Events)

Introduction

The fundamental of the church unity is the Evangelical faith of the Christians and the tradition of the church structure. There is no schism on the basis of the theological doctrine in the Reformed Church of Lithuania and in this aspect the Church is united. Different opinions may exist on the doctrine but they are not and should not be the cause of the dissidence in the Church. The structure of the Church is based on the church law. The church law differs from the secular law because it is basically grounded on the teaching of the Word of Lord and the execution of this teaching, or the practice of faith - the tradition. The word "tradition" means the " written tradition" and it is very clearly put in the Church agendas, Synods' Acts and in writings of confession of faith. The Lithuanian Evangelical Reformed Christians follow the Canon Law of Evangelical Reformed Church of Lithuania. It was canons that reinforced the Church Acts of the Synod of the Reformed Church of Lithuania, e.g. Canon V-1929 " On the Statutes of the Evangelical Reformed Church of Lithuania". While interpreting the Acts of the church law, the principle of a precedent is applied, although the final interpretation of a legal act is based on the teaching of the Word of Lord. So, on issuing the acts of the church law, the final interpretation is based on the teaching of the Word of Lord. The principle Ecclesia reformata semper reformanda (the Reformed Church is always under reforms), also means that the acts of the church law have to be verified with the times, whether they conform to the teaching of the Word of Lord.

"The force of Reformed in Lithuania - Word of God and church law within a strong community."

sernas.t_mThe interview by the journalist responsible editor of „Reformatų Metai"(„The Year of the Reformed Church") Aurelija Arlauskiene with the Superintendent General of the Evangelical Reformed Church of Lithuania, Tomas Šernas.

On June 24-26 the Synod of the Evangelical Reformed Church of Lithuania took place in Birzai. On June 24 the Synod evening session started with the usual festive service. Unfortunately, the holiday mood was spoiled by an incident. While people were leaving the Church, two private security crews arrived in the territory of the congregation and informed the Rev. Rimas Mikalauskas about their instructions to guard the Church and rectory and prevent parishioners‘ entrance into the territory. Right away the reamining parishioners held a vigil against those instructions. The vigil is still going on and will continue as long as it is required to protect their Church. What is the origin of the conflict in Birzai?

Ignoring the law. The Evangelical Reformed Church of Lithuania is one of the most traditional religious communities and has experienced a great deal of tension between legal units for several years.

THE EVANGELICAL REFORMED CHURCH of LITHUANIA
UNITAS LITHUANIAE SYNOD
(ERCL -UNITAS LITHUANIAE SYNOD)

Introduction. The Evangelical Reformed Church of Lithuania as a united Reformed Church organization and Reformed Church province of Lithuania can be counted from the year 1557 at the Synod in Vilnius on December 14th of that year. From that year the Province (also can be called General or National) Synod met regularly forming all the church provinces (district Synods) of The Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Started from two and later growing to six districts and representative district synods with leading elder pastor - superintendent (senior). The abbreviated name for the church is in Latin, Unitas Lithuaniae (shorter-UL) or in Polish, Jednota Litewska (Union of provincial Church of Lithuania). It sent its representatives to the Polish -Lithuanian Commonwealth (Rzeczpospolita) General Synods with representatives from 3 provinces: Minor Poland (Malopolska Jednota), Maior Poland (Wielkopolska Jednota) and Lithuania (Jednota Litewska).

However in it's administration UL was in fact a self-governing Church. The first Superintendent of the church was Rev. Simonas Zacijus (Szymon Zacjusz, approx 1507-1591). In 1565 the anti- Trinitarian Lithuanian Brotherhood who rejected the doctrine of the Trinity separated from UL. The UL parish network covered nearly all of The Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Its district centers were Vilnius, Kedainai, Biržai (today - Lithuania), Sluck, Kojdanov and Zabludov later Izabelin (today - Belorussia). The Church in Lithuania grew weaker due to the effects of war and the counter-reformation. Up until the Second World War, The Reformed Church in Lithuania had about 10,000 believers. Now the Church has over 7,000 believers with parishes in Biržai and Biržai region and Kėdainai (the historical area of Duchy of Radziwiłłs) , Klaipėda (area of former Prussia was called as Minor Lithuania) and Vilnius (the capital of Grand Duchy of Lithuania), and the other large towns (Šiauliai, Panevėžys and Kaunas).
